Sidewalk Counseling | Three Reasons to Speak for the Unborn

The church cannot be silent about this issue if it is committed to a biblical worldview. There is no doubt that abortion comprises one of the greatest unspoken tragedies of our day.

1. The Gospel is Radically Pro-Life

From the opening pages of Scripture, the plight of man after the Fall is framed in the context of death (Gen 2:17; 3:19). Yet Jesus came into the world that those who believe in him may have eternal life (John 10:28). The motivation for pleading for the lives of the unborn is the life-giving gospel of Jesus Christ. Our ministry is a response to the amazing love and mercy of God. We are pro-life because the gospel is radically pro-life.

2. The Bible Commands Us to Rescue Those Being Carried Away to Death.

Proverbs 24:11-12 states, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.  If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?” This is a clear command of Scripture, yet many have grown complacent in a culture that normalizes things like abortion. On the last day, no excuse will suffice for the Church’s silence on the issue of abortion. We want to be those who are both hearers and doers of God’s Word (James 1:22).

3. God Calls Us to Expose That Which is Evil.

Passivity and tolerance are cultural values, but not values set forth in the Bible.  Instead, the Bible says, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them” (Ephesians 5:11).  The Lord calls us as Christians not to remain neutral on issues that His Word clearly addresses. We want to expose the evil of abortion by holding up the light of God’s Word. We do this because we both love the gospel and we love the lost.

The church cannot be silent about this issue if it is committed to a biblical worldview. There is no doubt that abortion comprises one the greatest unspoken tragedies of our day. And as followers of Christ, we are called to expose the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). Will you love your neighbor enough to speak truth in love to them? Or, will you remain silent? The Scripture is clear on the issue of abortion. The question is, will your church respond with equal clarity, conviction, and compassion?
