Praying As Though Lives Depend On It

An Open Letter from Heath Lambert to the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors

Over the last several weeks Christians have been horrified by the string of gruesome videos, which picture the barbaric abortion practices of Planned Parenthood and their exchange of baby parts for financial gain. Christians have known for decades that legalized abortion has made us residents in a culture of death, but these videos have placed this horrifying procedure in front of our faces and at the center of our national consciousness. They have sparked a national debate that could defund Planned Parenthood of hundreds of millions of dollars and—potentially—change the moral tide in America concerning abortion. At this crucial hour all Christians must act.

I believe it is my responsibility to take any action I can to facilitate the demise of an organization that is bent on the destruction and sale of human beings. It is that conviction that leads me to write to you today.

As biblical counselors we have experienced the fallout from abortion in unique ways. Many of us have spent hours in counseling prevailing upon women to choose life as they experienced an unwanted pregnancy. Others of us have poured into the lives of women devastated by the decision to have an abortion. As counselors we have witnessed this pain and know the terrible cost to human joy that is abortion. Because the crisis of abortion strikes us where we minister we feel a particular need to respond.

It is in that spirit that I want to urge those in our association of counselors to respond in two ways. First, several reports indicate that the United States Congress will hold a vote on whether to defund Planned Parenthood before their August recess. I want to urge you to call the Capital switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to speak with the office of your Senator or Representative. Communicate to your representatives in Congress that you would like him or her to vote in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood. It is crucial that our leadership in Washington D.C. hear from us on this matter. Our association has over a thousand members all across the nation and your voice will matter. Take some time right now and make this call.

Second, we must pray. If you are like me you have two Senators who will vote to defund, and a Representative who will never cast such a vote. Our response to such a reality is that God is the King of heaven and earth and he does all that he pleases (Pss 115:3). Because of that we can reach out to Him who will always hear and who will fight for our cause. I want to invite you to join me and the staff at ACBC in a season of prayer and fasting on Monday, August 3. We will be praying that God would shatter the American culture of death, that he would save innocent lives, that he would protect women from the pain and sin of abortion, and that the representatives of our government would be overwhelmed with a desire to withhold funds from such a wicked organization. You could fast for the whole day or just a meal or two. But, please join us.

This is a crucial moment where we must demonstrate faithfulness together.

I am grateful for you, and for the opportunity to serve our association. May God bless us in these crucial days.
